Petersen’s tenure is marked by significant postseason accomplishments, including two trips to the NCAA Division II Elite Eight in 2010 and 2024. His 2010 squad achieved a program-best No. 5 national ranking after a historic run to the quarterfinals. Over his two decades at the helm, the program has finished in the national Top-25 six times. His peers have recognized this sustained excellence by naming him the PBC Coach of the Year seven times, the highest count for any coach in conference history.
Player Development and Academic Excellence
Beyond team trophies, Petersen has a proven track record of developing individual talent and fostering academic discipline. He has mentored 18 All-Americans, 79 All-Region selections, and 24 players who have transitioned into professional soccer leagues. His program has also celebrated seven PBC Players of the Year and seven Golden Boot winners. Academically, the Lakers have thrived under his leadership, producing several CSC Academic All-Americans and achieving a record 3.3 team GPA in 2019.
Professional Background and Innovation
Before joining Clayton State, Petersen built a diverse resume across the collegiate and professional ranks. He coached Spartanburg Methodist to an NJCAA National Championship in 1994 and spent eight seasons in the United Soccer Leagues (USL) in various leadership roles. In 1999, while coaching the Raleigh Capital Express, Petersen made history by starting Wendy Gebauer, who became the first woman to play in a professional men’s soccer game in the United States. He also holds elite coaching certifications, including a USSF “A” License.
Military Service and Personal Background
Petersen’s leadership style is informed by his background as a First Lieutenant and Airborne Ranger Platoon Leader in the U.S. Army’s 82nd Airborne Division. An alumnus of Presbyterian College, where he was an All-American player himself, he holds a Master’s degree in Sports Science. Having grown up in Ghana and Nigeria as the son of missionary parents, Petersen now resides in Georgia with his wife, Mona Banks, and their daughter, Priscilla.
